Drifting and floating and fading away

It was bought to my attention that certain comments weren’t getting published and I don’t know what went wonky with the settings, as I don’t have any spam blockers on, so I apologize, I hope I fixed it now. I found your comments and now they are republished. Sorry for the confusion :)

Today we had numerous guest lectures and one was a health and safety guy, who was a bit like a cartoon character. So overly animated, but just not getting his information across. The only thing that kept me awake was knowing we had a 2 hour lunch, and my friends and I went for a proper meal. Much fun.

On our way back to uni we were walking up the high street and one of the big department stores had the most elaborate xmas window displays I have seen in my life. It had just gone up so everyone was milling around and my friend Janette grabbed my hand and went skipping over to show me. Apparently every year its a different theme and this year it was characters from Beatrix Potter stories. It was cute, I’ll admit.

Although what always terrifies me with displays like that is the eyes of the creatures, moving about on the tracks, or strings. Next to clowns (and inanement objects turning to life) dolls, creatures and anything containing porcelain just freaks me out. Once I was given a porcelain clown. Even the facade of the pink and white clothes and different coloured shoes did not help. Still terrified me. So I put all the other stuffed animals around it, just to be safe, because you never know.

Ever received a gift that somewhat frightened you?

  • I was once given Gwyneth Paltrow’s head in a box.

  • The scariest of all, right there.

  • This one time, some of our trashier relatives gave us this hideous snowman that was sculpted out of a large lump of plastic. I’ll never forget the look of confused disgust (that’s almost fear, right?) when my dad opened in. We all wanted to smash it or throw it on the fire but my mom wouldn’t let us. Fun killer.

So, giant mechanized mice and bunnies don’t do it for you, huh? Well that shoots my Christmas shopping ideas for you to hell. Back to the drawing board.

  • I am in a constant state of terror as to what my MIL will give me. Clothes she no longer wants (she is 40 years my senior) are a standard gift, and include the much feared ugly pink sweaters, grandma pants, and skirts. Have you ever seen me in a skirt? No, and you never will.

She has also given me back gifts I had previously given her, telling me “I don’t want this anymore, so you have it now”.

I’ve always rather liked those animated Christmas displays, perhaps not mid-November, but whatever. Just don’t look at their eyes.

  • SB,
So the other day when you called and told me you’d just seen the tackiest xmas ornament ever and thought of me…am I now being lumped in with said relatives? Did the snowman light up? I would have loved that :)

Surprisingly I don’t go weak in the knees for giant mice rats ;P Its gonna be a fun holiday. I can hardly wait.

    Barb,
I would be terrified with all that pink as well. Yikes. I’m so very glad you were able to avoid it on the trip back to London. Well done.

Hahaha! One of my friends Grandparents something similar once. They gave them back all their school pictures, which had been given over the years!! Harsh, I think. So for xmas the next year my friend put them all in a scrapbook and gave it back to them ;)

The display was cute, I just have to not look at the eyes next time I walk past.

  • Man, I was totally thinking of getting you a porcelain person made out of celery and carrots. Damn.

I don’t think I’ve ever got something that scared me. Things that confused me (a bathroom set when I was 17. Useful now, but at the time not so much). That was just odd though.

Thanks for fixing the comments. ;)

  • I once received Gwyneth Paltrow’s BOX. Scary.

  • Maggie,
Hahaha! I would have made the exception in your case. Placed it on the highest shelf or something ;)

I’m not sure what you mean by bathroom set? Towels and stuff? Didn’t you go to uni at 17 though?

I don’t know what’s up, you keep getting lumped in with spam. Annoying, but I’ll check the filter more often.

    Fearless,
Terrifying and frightening that would have been. Glad you lived to tell ;)

  • SPAM?!! I am not a spiced meat! Boooooo.

The bathroom set was a waste basket, toothbrush holder, cup, soap dish and lotion dispenser (liquid soap dispense).

I did go to uni at 17… I got this for Christmas the year before when I was still in high school… I think I may have used some of it in first year, definitely all in 2nd and 3rd.

And I’ll keep my eye out for said gift. ;)

  • I dunno, its weird and annoying as I have to publish them now too.

Ah, I see. Well, at least you were prepared :)
